The iconic Principality Stadium - nestled in the beating heart of Cardiff city centre - stands as a testament to the nation's rich rugby heritage and obsession since it opened in 1999 ahead of the Rugby World Cup, costing a total of £121 million.
Wales was riding high at the turn of the millennium, the country had voted for a devolved government, Welsh bands were echoing across the airways and the Welsh Rugby Union Team were on a historic winning run - including a first ever win over then reigning World Champions South Africa for the stadium’s opener in June 1999. Against the partially built backdrop of what has sometimes been affectionately known as a Cathedral - given its architectural design and the loud song that can be generated by its congregation on match days - a new Wales was born.
Since then, Principality Stadium - which is also the UK’s first and only stadium with a retractable roof - has been the theatre of countless epic moments. From Welsh grand slam triumphs to monumental Welsh football wins and European cup finals, world tours, monster trucks and more, it has witnessed some iconic times.
For Welsh rugby enthusiasts, Principality Stadium is more than just a venue; it's a sacred ground where passion and tradition converge. The stadium has witnessed numerous memorable matches, including the first-ever and only penalty shootout in rugby during a cup semi-final in 2009.
Principality’s legendary atmosphere (especially when its roof is closed) is famous all over the world and is a bucket list venue to play at for all rugby players. A compact, multi-tiered design of the stadium makes fans real feel like they really are on top of the action. Within it’s walls are also housed the offices of the Welsh Rugby Union, the national governing body of the sport in Wales.
The rapid growth of Cardiff as an international capital city has in part been driven by the significant economic contribution Principality Stadium has on the city and the wider metropolitan area - creating thousands of jobs and accommodating millions of visitors every year. During the global pandemic, the stadium took on a new purpose as one of the UK’s temporary hospitals set up to treat people suffering from Covid-19.
Principality Stadium is more than just a building; it's a cornerstone of Welsh identity, culture and ambition, reflecting the nation's pride and passion for rugby and its ability to host world-class events. Its rich history, architectural brilliance, and cultural significance ensure that it remains a source of pride for Wales and a beacon of excellence in the world of sports and entertainment, making it the perfect choice to add to your bucket-list!
