Murrayfield Stadium, officially known as Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium, stands as a monumental symbol of Scottish sporting history. Its the largest stadium in Scotland and the fifth largest in the UK. Located in the heart of Edinburgh, this iconic venue has been the epicentre of numerous memorable events since it opened to fans in 1925.

It has also hosted several other events beyond Scottish Rugby, including concerts - welcoming some of the biggest names in music such as The Rolling Stones, Madonna, Taylor Swift, Tina Turner, Oasis, Bruce Springsteen and so many others. The stadium has witnessed football matches, American football games and even religious gatherings, proving to be a versatile venue and attracting a diverse range of fans that go far beyond its rugby heritage.

 

What is Murrayfield Stadium’s capacity?

The stadium’s capacity ranks as the fifth largest in the UK, with seating for 67,144 spectators, making it the largest stadium in Scotland. In 1975, 104,000 fans gathered to witness Scotland face Wales, an incredible number which set a record for the highest attendance at a rugby match!

When was Murrayfield Stadium built?

The stadium officially completed its construction on 21 March 1925 and opened with a clash between Scotland and England, marking a victorious Grand Slam for Scotland.

Murrayfield Stadium typically hosts rugby union games, in recent years it has also hosted the Scottish Hydro Electric Cup, Pro12 and Heineken Cup matches. It’s the home ground of the Scottish Rugby Union (SRU), Edinburgh Rugby and formerly the Edinburgh Sevens and Scottish Claymores.
