UTS 2024: The Frankfurt Review

The final UTS 2024 tour event recently wrapped up in Frankfurt, and six of the eight Grand Finalists have now secured their place at what is quickly becoming one of the most in-demand tennis tickets in the UK.

We had new event winners, emotional farewells, and all the incredible action and atmosphere that we have come to expect from a UTS event.

Let’s quickly recap what took place and what this means for London’s UTS Grand Final taking place from 6 to 8 December 2024.

The players & what was at stake

Ben Shelton

Playing in his first UTS competition of the 2024 season, Shelton needed to perform extremely well to even stand a chance to qualify for the Grand Final in London. However, as a rising star in the sport, with a game that perfectly suits the UTS format, nothing is out of the question.

Ugo Humbert

Heading into the event as one of the top contenders, Humbert’s aim in Frankfurt was to secure his qualification definitively and put on a strong showing that would give him confidence for the Grand Finals.

Thanasi Kokkinakis

Fondly nicknamed ‘Kokki’, Kokkinakis desperately needed a victory in Frankfurt to secure a place at the Grand Finals after showing promise earlier in the year but without the required rewards.

Lorenzo Musetti

UTS Frankfurt was Musetti’s first UTS appearance, meaning he needed to make an immediate impact if he was going to qualify for the Grand Final. However, even a strong event would be enough to continue boosting his profile in the UTS series for future seasons.

Dominic Thiem

UTS Frankfurt was particularly emotional for the ‘Dominator’, as it was one of Thiem’s final professional appearances before retirement.
Thiem could still qualify for the UTS Grand Final, which would prolong his retirement further, but if not this could be his final event.

Denis Shapovalov

‘Shapo’ needed a strong showing in Frankfurt after showing some promise this season, albeit only in short glimpses. His power game is perfectly suited to compete in the UTS, so Shapalov was well-placed to put in a good showing.

Jan-Lennard Struff

Playing on home soil, Struff’s goal was to utilise local support and earn the UTS points needed to try and qualify for London. However, to truly stand a chance, he needed to win and secure his spot.

Gael Monfils

Despite the UTS’s infancy as a sport, ‘La Monf’ has already established himself as a well-known figure on the tour, playing regularly throughout the 2023 and 2024 seasons. As such, Monfils has already accrued enough points to qualify for December’s Grand Final in London, allowing him to focus on entertaining the crowd and getting some momentum going into the season finale in London.

The Results

Ben Shelton successfully overcame all challengers and won UTS Frankfurt, defeating Ugo Humbert in the final with a score of 19-10, 8-18, 15-11, and 19-11.

This was Shelton’s first UTS victory, and it allowed him to sneak into the UTS Grand Final at the last minute, booking his ticket to the much-anticipated London event in December!

The results also marked Dominic Thiem’s final UTS event after being unable to make it past the group stage. However, the UTS organisers did a fantastic job honouring him with a tribute, and the unique UTS atmosphere allowed fans to get close to Thiem and thank him personally for his many years of professional play.

What this means for the Grand Final in London

So, with all that in mind, what does this mean for the Grand Finals, set to take place in London at the Copper Box Arena at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on 6, 7 and 8 December?

Well, we now know the official lineup for the event, other than the two final spots. Andrey Rublev, Gael Monfils, Ben Shelton, Alex de Minaur, Alexander Bublik, and Ugo Humbert will all battle it out in the uniquely and highly entertaining format alongside two wildcard entries.
