Wales rugby history

The men’s Wales rugby union team, have long been one of the traditional powerhouses of world rugby since their first international against England in 1881.

The Welsh Rugby Union was founded in the same year as the game took hold in the working-class south Wales coalfields in the late-nineteenth century.

Winning habits

The Wales rugby team have made the semi-finals of the Rugby World Cup on three occasions (1987, 2011 and 2019) but have yet to make a final. Their home - the Principality Stadium in Cardiff - has long been regarded as having the best match-day atmosphere in international rugby since it opened in 1999. It remains a fortress for visiting teams and a not-to-be-missed experience for all rugby fans.

Despite their relatively small size, Wales have produced many of the game’s greatest players and have enjoyed frequent success in the Guinness Six Nations championship. Sir Gareth Edwards, regarded by many as the greatest player of all time, fearless fullback J.P.R. Williams and the mercurial talents of Barry John and Phil Bennett were at the core of the golden era side during the 1970s.
