Premier League 2026 27 Season Preview

three minutes
For football fans it’s been a glorious year of back-to-back football so far - featuring an energetic end to the 25/26 Premier League season, the Champions League, and straight into the FIFA World Cup. Now, the Premier League is set to kick off all over again with the 2026/27 season starting this week- and what a season we have in-store!

What Can Fans Expect from the 2026/27 Premier League Season?

This football season won’t be short of action, with key headlines already adding to the anticipation of the Premier League.

We start the season with nine (at the time of writing!) new managers - including three within the big six - a suite of returning World Cup stars, and some exciting looking newly promoted teams.

Regular title favourites Manchester City have a notable change in leadership this season- Pep Guardiola left at the end of last season, with his former assistant Enzo Maresca stepping in to lead the team.

From management changes to post-World Cup injuries- and transfer records broken - this Premier League season is set to be unpredictable and could prove to be a multi-club title race.

Which Teams Should You Be Watching This Season?

Coming off the back of last season’s win, Arsenal are favourites for the Premier League this season. The defending champions will certainly be ones to watch but face a tricky start to the season with key player William Saliba out injured - and tough games against Aston Villa and Chelsea in their opening three matches.

Coventry City are back in the Premier League, following a 25-year exile – with their first match, and the opening match of the Premier League season, taking them to Emirates Stadium to face the defending champions on their home turf.

While they underperformed last season, Chelsea are still one of the teams to watch- having taken advantage of the transfer window, signing Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, as well as bringing on full-back Marco Palestra, closing a two-year deal with Jordan Henderson from Brentford, and striker Danny Welbeck joining the Blues...to name a few!

Spurs have also maximised their transfers - close to matching the spend from Chelsea and breaking their own transfer record -signing midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham, and Sandro Tonali from Newcastle.

Post-World Cup: How Will the Teams’ Performances be Influenced

Key Arsenal starter, William Saliba is set to miss an extended period after suffering a back injury during the World Cup. Saliba being out of action for an extended period could affect their title chances, with statistics showing his presence in the team had Arsenal winning 68.7% of their Premier League matches since his 2022 debut. When he’s out of action, that drops to 47.6%.

As well as returning to the Premier League as champions, the Gunners’ line-up includes stand-out World Cup talent - from Spain’s winners David Raya, Mikel Merino and Martin Zubimendi, England’s Bukayo Saka, and Norway’s Captain Martin Ødegaard.

When Do Premier League Games Kick Off?

The first whistle blows this month, with the opening match on Friday 21 August between Arsenal and Coventry City at the reigning champions’ home of Emirates Stadium. The remaining Premier League teams will kick off match day 1 of 38 on Saturday 22nd.
